I.D.3 Shoulder & Arm: Muscles & Vessels: Shoulder, Axilla, Arm, & Elbow: Page 1 of 4

Objectives:

4.3.1  Trace the flow of blood (arterial and venous) from the axillary artery to the shoulder, axilla and arm.

4.3.2  Demonstrate the known collateral (arterial and venous) connections in the shoulder and scapular regions.

4.3.3  Trace the flow of lymph into and out of the axillary lymph nodes. Identify the anatomical location of different groups of lymph nodes (whether or not they are seen on the images), their relationship to the other axillary structures, and afferent sources and efferent targets of each group. Follow the course of lymphatic drainage of the breast.

4.3.4  Observe the relationship of the venous system to the muscles of the anterior compartment of the arm and thorax.

Step 1:  Begin with the anterior view of shoulder with brachial plexus.
Step 2:  Add the left subclavian artery.
Step 3:  Add the brachiocephalic trunk.
Step 4:  Add the common carotid arteries.
Step 5:  Add the right subclavian artery.
Step 6:  Add the axillary arteries.
Step 7:  Add the suprascapular arteries.
Step 8:  Add the brachial arteries.
Step 9:  Add the posterior circumflex humeral artery which can only be seen on the right side of our cadaver.
Step 10:  Add the profunda brachii ateries.

Step 11:  Rotate the thorax and dissect away muscles in order to expose the path of these arteries more fully.
