The facial nerve provides four basic components:
Brachial motor - Brachial efferent
The brachial motor portions of the facial nerve innervate the muscles of facial expression and scalp.
These fibers also innervate the stapedius muscle, the posterior belly of the digastric muscle and the stylohyoid muscle.
Parasympathetic - Gerneral visceral efferent
These fibers supply the lacrimal glands and salivary glands including the sublingual and submandibular glands.

Visceral sensory - Somatic afferent fibers
These fibers supply taste to the anterior two thirds of the tongue.
General somatic sensory - General somatic afferent fibers
These fibers provide sensory input from a small region near the external auditory meatus.
