Objectives:

3.1.1 Identify the olfactory, optic, oculomotor, trochlear, abducens nerves and their branches.

3.1.2 Identify the foramen through which each of the cranial nerves exit the cranial cavity and include the components of each cranial nerve.

3.1.3 Understand the relationship of the nasal cavity to the anterior fossa, orbits and the cranial nerves.

3.1.4 Predict the functional deficits, which would result from damage to cranial nerves I, II, III, IV, VI.

Step 1:  Begin with the sagittal brain section.
Step 2:  Add the olfactory bulbs and nerves. Be sure to rotate the cadaver to appreciate the three dimentions of this system.
Step 3:  Notice that the olfactory bulbs sit on the cribiform plate which is part of the ethmoid bone.

The ethmoid bone forms the central part of the nasal cavity.

The nasal cavity circulates the air with the turbinates (Superior, middle and inferior concha) to allow for warming and smelling to occur.

The nasal cavity also serves as the drainage point for the lacrimal ducts, the frontal sinuses, ethmoidal cells, sphenoidal sinuses and the maxillary sinuses.
